Starting solids can feel overwhelming, especially when you're wondering what to give your baby for breakfast every day. These five simple homemade breakfast ideas are soft, easy to prepare, and made with familiar ingredients.

👶 Important: 6+ months is a general guide. Start complementary foods when your baby is developmentally ready, and adjust the texture according to your baby's eating skills. Always supervise your baby while eating.

🥣 1. Apple Ragi Porridge

A simple combination of ragi and naturally sweet apple that makes a nutritious breakfast for babies starting solids.

Ingredients

  • Ragi flour

  • Apple

  • Water

  • A little ghee, optional

How to Make

  1. Peel and cut the apple into small pieces.

  2. Steam the apple separately until it becomes soft.

  3. Mash the steamed apple and keep it aside.

  4. Mix ragi flour with water to make a smooth, lump-free mixture.

  5. Cook the ragi on low heat, stirring continuously.

  6. Cook until the ragi is completely cooked and reaches a soft porridge consistency.

  7. Add the mashed steamed apple and mix well.

  8. Adjust the consistency with a little water if needed.

  9. Allow it to cool before serving.

Mom tip: Steaming the apple separately makes it soft and easy to mash.

🌾 2. Soft Dalia Porridge with Breast Milk or Formula

This is one of those simple homemade breakfasts that doesn't require many ingredients.

The trick is to cook the dalia until it becomes very soft, then mash it well.

Ingredients

  • Dalia (broken wheat)

  • A little ghee

  • Water

  • Breast milk or prepared formula

How to Make

  1. Heat a little ghee in a pressure cooker.

  2. Add the dalia.

  3. Roast dalia on low flame until it becomes aromatic and lightly roasted.

  4. Add water.

  5. Pressure cook until the dalia is very soft.

  6. Mash the cooked dalia well.

  7. Allow it to cool slightly.

  8. Add breast milk or prepared formula and mix.

  9. Adjust the consistency if required.

Important

If using breast milk, add it after cooking rather than pressure-cooking it with the dalia.

If using formula, prepare the formula separately according to the manufacturer's instructions and add the prepared formula after the dalia has cooled sufficiently.

🌾 3. Sattu Porridge

Sattu, made from roasted gram, can be turned into a quick and simple homemade porridge.

Ingredients

  • Chana sattu powder

  • A little ghee

  • Water

How to Make

  1. Heat a little ghee in a pan.

  2. Add the sattu.

  3. Gently roast the sattu in the ghee.

  4. Gradually add water while stirring continuously.

  5. Keep stirring to prevent lumps.

  6. Cook on low heat until you get a smooth porridge.

  7. Allow it to cool before serving.

Mom tip: Add the water gradually while stirring. This helps you get a smooth, lump-free consistency.

🥑 4. Egg Yolk & Avocado Mash

This one isn't technically a traditional porridge, but its soft, creamy consistency makes it a lovely breakfast option for babies who are ready for these foods.

Ingredients

  • 1 hard-boiled egg yolk

  • 2 tbsp ripe avocado

  • A little breast milk, prepared formula, or boiled and cooled water, if needed

How to Make

  1. Hard-boil the egg and separate the yolk.

  2. Mash the cooked egg yolk with a fork.

  3. Mash the ripe avocado until smooth.

  4. Mix the egg yolk and avocado together.

  5. If needed, add a little breast milk, prepared formula or boiled and cooled water to adjust the consistency.

  6. Serve fresh.

Mom tip: A ripe, soft avocado makes this especially easy to mash.

If egg is new for your baby: Introduce it appropriately and watch for any signs of an allergic reaction. If your baby has a known allergy or is at high risk of food allergy, discuss introduction with your pediatrici

🍎 5. Apple Suji Porridge

A warm, soft porridge made with suji and naturally sweet apple.

Ingredients

  • ½ apple, peeled and grated

  • 2 tbsp suji

  • Water as required

  • 1 tsp ghee

How to Make

  1. Heat ghee in a pan.

  2. Add the suji.

  3. Roast it on low flame for about 2–3 minutes.

  4. Add water and cook until the suji becomes soft.

  5. Add the grated apple.

  6. Cook for another 4–5 minutes, until the apple becomes very soft.

  7. Add a little more water if needed to adjust the consistency.

  8. Allow it to cool before serving.

Mom tip: A naturally sweet apple means you don't need to add sugar.

How Soft Should Breakfast Be?

For babies beginning solids, breakfast should be soft, smooth or well-mashed, depending on their developmental stage.

As your baby becomes more comfortable with eating, you can gradually move towards thicker textures and foods with more consistency.

The goal isn't to keep everything completely smooth forever—gradually increasing texture helps babies learn to eat different foods.

🌈 Easy Breakfast Rotation

You don't need to prepare something completely different every morning.

Try rotating:

Monday: Apple Ragi Porridge
Tuesday: Milk Dalia
Wednesday: Sattu Porridge
Thursday: Egg Yolk & Avocado
Friday: Apple Suji Porridge

Then repeat your baby's favourite. ❤️

As your baby gets older and becomes comfortable with more foods, you can introduce new combinations and textures.

Keep It Simple ❤️

Starting solids is a learning process—for your baby and for you.

Some days your baby may happily finish their breakfast. Other days, two bites may be followed by the spoon being thrown onto the floor. 😄

That's completely okay.

You don't need elaborate recipes every morning. Having a few simple, homemade breakfasts that you know how to prepare can make the whole solids journey feel much easier.

Save this list for the next time you're wondering what to make for breakfast. 🤍
